Chiefs cut C.J. Spiller, re-signed him, cut him, re-signed him, and just cut him again

The Chiefs cut C.J. Spiller as they trimmed the roster down to 53 players back in September, and the move surprised a lot of people. It was even more surprising the following Sunday when Kansas City re-signed Spiller to the active roster.

But hold on to your hats, because the Chiefs weren’t done. They released Spiller again. The C.J. Spiller saga in Kansas City is far from over, because last Monday, they signed him yet again, according to the Kansas City Star’s Terez Paylor. One week later, they cut him again, per Paylor.

Charcandrick West went down with a head injury in the Chiefs’ loss to the Steelers last Sunday. West is in the concussion protocol, and the Chiefs need a short-term solution to complement Kareem Hunt and Akeem Hunt until West can return. Spiller’s release suggests that West may be healthy enough to get back on the field this week.

Spencer Ware went down with a PCL injury in preseason that required surgery to repair. Keeping Spiller around makes sense, especially since Ware is likely to miss the entire season. But, no:

That left the Chiefs with just Charcandrick West and Kareem Hunt on the roster. That’s probably why this happened on Sunday:

Andy Reid was asked after Ware’s injury if it made it more likely that Spiller would lock up a roster spot.

“Right now, yeah, I would tell you today,” Reid said, via Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride.

We don’t know why the Chiefs cut Spiller in the first place, but it made sense to re-sign him. Then he was gone, then back in Kansas City, and now he’s out again — for now, anyway.
