Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters was carted off with what appeared to be a serious right leg injury suffered on Monday Night Football against Washington.
The Eagles announced it was a knee injury and that he wouldn’t return to the game just minutes after he left the field.
Peters, 35, has been one of the best offensive linemen of the last couple of decades with nine trips to the Pro Bowl, including each of the last four seasons. He was injured Monday when a defensive lineman fell into his right leg awkwardly.
Before he got on the cart and left the game, an air cast was applied to his right leg.
He left the game to chants of his name from the Philadelphia crowd.
What does this mean for the Eagles? A 6’4, 328-pound Pro Bowl-level talent isn’t something that can just be replaced with a player off the bench. Stepping into the role for now is Halapoulivaati Vaitai, a fifth-round pick in 2016 who has seven career starts for the team.
Peters signed a three-year, $32.5 million contract in June, so the injury likely isn’t the end of his career with the team even if it’s season-ending. But if it is a year ender for Peters, that’s going to be a tough pill for a very good team to swallow.
